Reflecting on a Quarter Century and Looking Toward the Future
On May 19, 2025, the Institute for Strategic Leadership (ISL), the founding body of Shizenkan University, held its 25th Anniversary Commemorative Ceremony at Arcadia Ichigaya in Tokyo.
Approximately 300 guests—including alumni of ISL and Shizenkan, as well as representatives from foreign embassies in Japan—gathered to reflect on ISL’s quarter-century journey and to envision the form of leadership required in the decades to come.

The evening commenced with a warm and collegial reception. Attendees enjoyed refreshments and informal conversation before the formal program began.
The opening featured a live performance by URANUS, a musical ensemble combining the traditional Japanese instruments of the 25-string koto and shakuhachi, filling the hall with a rich atmosphere of cultural reverence.
The event was emceed by Professor Peter David Pedersen of Shizenkan University. Opening remarks were delivered by Mr. Tsuyoshi Nagano, the 5th Chairperson of ISL and Chairman of the Board of Tokio Marine Holdings, Inc., followed by a toast from Mr. Kentaro Ohyama, Chairman of the IRIS Group. These opening moments set the tone for a memorable celebration.

This was followed by presentations from graduates who are putting their learning into action across sectors, offering concrete examples of how the ISL-Shizenkan model contributes to real-world change.
Further, the institutions’ initiatives toward the implementation of social innovation were introduced, and the session culminated in a moving performance by White Hand Chorus NIPPON featuring Erika Colon, symbolizing the values of inclusion and coexistence through music.
